Twins DNA Testing
Using DNA to find out if your twins are identical or not
It's not as easy as it seems to determine whether twins are identical. 'Identical' twins don't always look the same, while some 'fraternal' or non-identical twins look very alike. Sometimes twins grow up never knowing for sure which they are.
Who is this test for?
|
|
 |
| Parents, curious about whether their twins really are identical |
| Parents or twins themselves, wanting to know for medical reasons whether they are identical (ie whether they are compatible for organ donation) |
What's the difference between identical and fraternal twins?
Identical twins are the result of a single egg dividing and separating after it has been fertilised by a single sperm. When two eggs are independently fertilised by two different sperm, fraternal twins result.
How are DNA samples taken?
Samples are taken using a simple mouth swab.
